Lauras Smilgevičius

Lauras Smilgevičius is a dentist working in Klaipėda who, in 2014, together with his wife, dentist Rasa Smilgevičienė, founded Miško Dental Clinic. Medicine runs through three generations of his family: his grandparents were pharmacists, his mother a dentist, and Lauras came to the profession naturally, seeing the everyday work of a dentist up close from a young age.

Lauras describes his work as oral architecture: first a thorough diagnosis, then a plan, and only then treatment. He takes on complex, long-term cases that call for restoring a long-neglected mouth or correcting a patient's bite. The treatment plan is always drawn up with the patient's financial situation and priorities in mind: not everything at once, but what matters most, in a logical sequence.

Lauras does not judge or reproach patients for how long they have avoided the dentist. There are no reproaches or lectures in his surgery; instead, a conversation about what worries you as you sit in the chair, why you have come now, and what we can do together. This warmth is reflected in patient reviews: several of them begin with the words "I rarely write reviews...".

Dr Lauras sees patients in Lithuanian and English. Born and raised in Plungė, he also speaks the Samogitian dialect fluently and is happy to use it when a patient from Plungė, Plateliai or Skuodas comes into the surgery. As he has said himself: "I see nothing provincial in dialects, as it might seem to others, that is nonsense!"

Not many dentists also have a YouTube channel. On his, Lauras collects his own humorous Samogitian songs under the name "Odontosaur couplets". In March 2021 his song "Kuovids deviniuolika" (a Samogitian take on the pandemic) gathered almost 14 thousand views in two days and became an internet hit, covered by LRT, 15min and tv3.

Music in the family is no coincidence: Lauras’s sister is Aistė Smilgevičiūtė, vocalist of the band Skylė. Lauras contributes to the band’s albums; his vocals can be found on Skylė’s 2000, 2009 and 2020 records and in the musical "Legends of Vilnius" (2001).

In the surgery, the YouTube activity comes in very handy when working with children. In the dentist’s words: "When working with children my YouTube activity really helps. Children are very sincere and open." A song is often the first bridge between a child and the dentist’s chair.
