What is a porcelain veneer?

A porcelain veneer is a thin, custom-made ceramic shell bonded to the visible front surface of a tooth. Veneers change the shape or colour of the front teeth, or the gaps between them. They are a subtle option when the tooth itself is healthy and you want to change how it looks, and only minimal tooth tissue is removed. In our price list they appear as ceramic veneers.

A veneer is not the same as a crown. A crown wraps around the whole tooth and protects it, so it is more often needed for a badly damaged tooth, a tooth with a large filling or a tooth after root canal treatment. A veneer is an aesthetic restoration for a healthy tooth.

If you simply want lighter teeth, teeth whitening is worth discussing first: it lightens natural enamel, whereas veneers, crowns and fillings do not change colour. So if you are planning both whitening and veneers, whitening comes first and the veneer shade is chosen afterwards.

We take impressions with a digital intraoral scanner, a dental technician makes the veneer, and we choose the shade and shape together with you. Before final bonding you see the veneer and judge it for yourself, and if anything is not right we adjust it.

When are porcelain veneers a good option?

  • Irregularly shaped front teeth: a veneer can change the shape of a tooth when the tooth itself is healthy.
  • A colour that whitening cannot fix: when whitening does not achieve the shade you want.
  • Gaps between the front teeth: veneers can make the gaps smaller.
  • Changing the look of several front teeth: when several teeth are treated, their colour and shape are planned together so they match.
  • The tooth itself is healthy: a badly damaged tooth, or one weakened by root canal treatment, more often needs a crown.

How porcelain veneers are made and fitted

  1. 1

    Consultation

We talk through what you would like to change and assess whether a veneer, whitening or a crown suits your goal better. Prosthetic work starts only on clean, healthy gums.

  2. 2

    Planning and shade selection

We photograph your teeth and choose the shade to match the neighbouring teeth or your wishes. If whitening is planned, it is done before the veneer shade is chosen.

  3. 3

    Preparing the tooth

The tooth surface is minimally reduced so the veneer fits precisely.

  4. 4

    Digital impressions

Impressions are taken with an intraoral scanner, without plastic trays or the gag reflex.

  5. 5

    Laboratory work

A dental technician makes the ceramic veneer from the digital impressions.

  6. 6

    Try-in and bonding

Before bonding we check the shape, colour and bite together and adjust if needed. Only then is the veneer bonded to the tooth.

Caring for porcelain veneers

Clean veneers like your own teeth: every day with a soft brush, toothpaste and floss. If after bonding your bite feels different or something presses at one point, get in touch: usually a small adjustment is all that is needed.

  • Do not bite hard things with your front teeth, such as nails, nut shells or ice.
  • Do not use your teeth as a tool, for example to open bottles or bite through thread.
  • If you grind your teeth at night, ask about a protective night guard: it protects both the veneers and your other teeth.
  • Attend professional dental hygiene visits every 6 months and a preventive check-up once a year.

If a veneer comes off or chips, keep it and contact the clinic. Do not glue it back at home with household adhesive.

Porcelain veneers in Klaipėda: frequently asked questions

How much do porcelain veneers cost in Klaipėda?
At Miško Clinic a ceramic veneer costs 500 €. If you are changing the look of several teeth, the total depends on the number of veneers. A consultation costs 30 €, and if you would like to lighten your other teeth before veneers, tray whitening costs 100 €. All prices are in our price list.
How is a veneer different from a crown?
A veneer covers the visible front surface of a tooth and is used to change its shape or colour when the tooth is healthy, so only minimal tooth tissue is removed. A crown wraps around the whole tooth: it rebuilds the shape of a badly damaged tooth and protects a fragile or root-treated tooth from fracture. Prices: crowns 350–450 €, a ceramic veneer 500 €.
Does the tooth need to be reduced for a veneer?
Yes, but only slightly. Less tooth tissue is removed for a veneer than for a crown: usually 1 to 2 mm around the tooth for a crown, and sometimes 0.3 to 0.5 mm for a veneer. The exact amount depends on what needs to change, so we discuss it when planning.
Should I choose whitening or veneers?
If you are happy with the shape of your teeth and only want a lighter shade, tray whitening (100 €) is worth discussing first. Veneers are considered when you want to change the shape, the gaps or a colour that whitening cannot fix. Bear in mind that whitening gel only works on natural enamel: veneers, crowns and fillings do not lighten, so whitening comes first and the veneer shade is chosen afterwards.
Do porcelain veneers look natural?
Ceramic veneers are a highly aesthetic option: we choose the shade from photographs and the neighbouring teeth, and before final bonding you see the veneer and judge it for yourself. If something does not look right, we adjust it, and only then do we bond it.
Can a veneer be placed on a root-treated tooth or one with a large filling?
For such teeth a crown is more often suggested: after root canal treatment a tooth becomes more fragile, and when a filling takes up a large part of the tooth, a crown reduces the risk of fracture. We make the final decision after an examination.
How can I make veneers last longer?
Clean them like your own teeth, avoid biting hard things with your front teeth and do not use your teeth as a tool. If you grind your teeth, wear a protective night guard. Regular hygiene visits and check-ups help us spot changes around the edges of a veneer in good time.
How many veneers will I need?
That depends on which teeth you want to change. When several front teeth are treated, we plan their colour and shape together so they match. We discuss the number of veneers and the total price at the consultation.
