On average teeth lighten by 4 to 8 shades over 7 to 14 days. One thing is worth understanding: the gel only works on natural enamel, so fillings, crowns and veneers will not change colour. If you have older cosmetic work at the front, it may need replacing afterwards so the shades match.

Aftercare following teeth whitening

The first 48 hours after each whitening session matter most. During this time the enamel is slightly more porous to pigment, so a white diet makes sense.

  • Avoid: coffee, black tea, red wine, red berries, tomato sauce, curries, beetroot, soy sauce and smoking.
  • You can have: milk, yoghurt, pale cheeses, chicken, rice, bananas, potatoes and pasta without coloured sauces.
  • After two days you return to your usual diet, though cutting back on staining foods in general helps the result last.
  • If you feel sensitivity to cold, use a toothpaste for sensitive teeth; the sensitivity usually settles within 1 to 3 days.

The trays stay with you, so in future you can top up the shade simply by buying a new tube of gel, with no need for new trays. Is whitening painful and will it cause sensitivity?
The procedure is painless: the gel is simply placed in the trays and worn for a set time. Temporary sensitivity to cold or heat is the most common side effect, experienced by about a third of people who whiten. It usually settles within a few days of finishing. If sensitivity appears during whitening, you can pause for a while and continue later.
How many shades will my teeth lighten?
On average teeth lighten by 4 to 8 shades compared with the starting point. It is impossible to say exactly whether you will get a 3 to 8 shade improvement, as it depends on the original tooth tissue, the density of the enamel and the cause of the darkening. That is why we always discuss a realistic expectation before we start.
Can I whiten my teeth if I have fillings, veneers or crowns?
Bleaching gel only works on natural tooth tissue, so fillings, ceramic veneers and crowns will not lighten. If there is an old filling or ceramic work at the front, it may look darker than the surrounding teeth after whitening. In that case we discuss with you whether the filling or veneer should be replaced later so the colours match.
Why is professional hygiene needed before whitening?
Bleaching gel only works effectively on a clean enamel surface. If there is plaque or tartar on the teeth, the result will be uneven: some areas will lighten and some will not. Can I whiten my teeth during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
We do not recommend teeth whitening for pregnant or breastfeeding women, as there is a lack of long-term research on this and the principle of "better safe" matters more than the cosmetic result. Wait until you have finished breastfeeding and then come back to us; the brightness will still be there.
From what age can teeth be whitened?
We recommend whitening from the age of 18, when the enamel is fully formed. For younger patients (16 to 17) it can be discussed individually with parents, but only once all the permanent teeth have erupted and it has been confirmed that there are no enamel disorders.
Does whitening damage the enamel?
A modern peroxide-based gel used in custom trays following the protocol does not damage the enamel. The short-term sensitivity is reversible and does not change the mineral structure of the enamel. Harm only occurs when abrasive pastes or strips are used without a consultation, or overly concentrated gels are used without supervision.
What should I do if my gums become irritated during whitening?
This usually means the gel has reached the gum margin. Stop for that day, clean your trays well, and next time use less gel (a tiny drop in each tooth recess, not the whole tray). If the irritation persists, call us and we will change the gel concentration or the protocol.
Can a single tooth be whitened if it is darker after root canal treatment?
Yes. For a single darkened tooth after root canal treatment, internal whitening is used: the gel is placed inside the tooth itself through a small opening at the back. This is a separate procedure that we discuss during a consultation after assessing the condition of the tooth.
