What is children's dentistry in?

Children's dentistry at Miško Clinic is not just fillings or extractions: it is a long-term friendship with the child and the parents. The first visit with us is always a get-to-know-you visit: the child explores the room, the dentist checks the little mouth, shows the instruments and talks about the brush and toothpaste. No treatment on the first visit, unless the child wants it.

Our children's dentistry is provided by Dr Rasa Smilgevičienė, who has extensive experience with young patients.

We fill milk and permanent teeth, seal the chewing surfaces of the back teeth with fissure sealants (25 €), treat the roots of milk teeth, carry out extractions, and provide orthodontic prevention with a Myobrace trainer and plate. We always talk to parents about food, dummy use, tooth-brushing habits and breathing through the nose. More about prices in the price list.

When is it needed?

  • The first tooth: a first get-to-know-you visit, at around one year of age.
  • A check-up: every 6 months, so early decay is spotted in good time.
  • Pain or darkening of a milk tooth: there is no need to wait for the permanent tooth, treatment is required.
  • Sealing the chewing teeth: when the permanent molars come through, a sealant protects them from decay.
  • Certificates before nursery or school: a check-up and the issuing of the required document.
  • Mouth-breathing or thumb-sucking habits: an orthodontic consultation, a Myobrace trainer or a plate.
  • Trauma: after a fall, a knock or a chipped tooth, contact us the same day.

How the procedure works

  1. 1

    Get-to-know-you visit

The child explores the room and meets the dentist. An examination, a chat with the parents, no treatment unless needed.

  2. 2

    Check-up

An examination, counting the teeth and a brushing-skills check. If needed, a dental X-ray (10 €).

  3. 3

    Fillings or sealants

We use light-curing composite, and offer children coloured fillings too. Sealing takes about 15 minutes.

  4. 4

    Treating a milk tooth

If a milk tooth is damaged, we fill it (from 50 €) or treat the roots (20 €). Milk teeth should be treated, not extracted.

  5. 5

    Milk tooth extraction

If a tooth can no longer be saved or is blocking the permanent one, we remove it gently (10 to 30 €).

  6. 6

    Orthodontic prevention

Where needed, a Myobrace trainer (200 €) or an orthodontic plate (350 €) helps shape a correct bite.

  7. 7

    Arranging the next visit

We discuss home care, diet and the timing of the next visit. We give parents clear recommendations.

Aftercare following children's dental treatment

After a child's visit, the home environment matters most: how you talk about what has just happened, how often you brush together, and what drinks you offer. Our recommendations are always tailored to the individual child, but a few general rules apply to everyone.

  • After a filling or extraction, do not let the child eat for 1 to 2 hours, especially if the area was numbed: they may unknowingly bite their lip or cheek.
  • For the first 24 hours after an extraction, avoid hot, hard and spicy food.
  • Until age 10, parents should re-brush the teeth after the child brushes: a child's coordination is not yet enough to clean every surface.
  • Try not to say 'you were good, you can have a sweet': it sends the opposite message.
  • Talk about the dentist as a helper, not as a threat.
  • Book a check-up every 6 months; a child's body grows quickly and problems appear faster than in adults.

If your child has pain or swelling that lasts more than a few hours after the visit, get in touch via our contact page. We always answer parents' questions between visits.

Why choose Miško Dental Clinic for children's dentistry

  • A get-to-know-you first visit: no stress, no forced treatment, the child sets the pace.
  • Dr Rasa Smilgevičienė: many years of experience with young patients, speaking the children's language.
  • Coloured fillings: for milk teeth we offer coloured fillings that create a positive experience.
  • Fissure sealants: a 25 € investment in one tooth that protects it from decay for years to come.
  • A family clinic: we often treat the whole family, so children see that their parents come to us calmly too.

Dentist Rasa Smilgevičienė on children's dentistry:

Did you know that you should first bring your little one to the dentist when their first tooth starts to come through? The child will explore the new surroundings, and I will tell you about caring for those emerging teeth. No stress, no treatment. The first meeting with a dentist should be pleasant and warm.

Using a dummy for too long, sugary drinks before bed, breathing through the mouth, 'bottle' decay; these are the most common topics we discuss with parents. In Lithuania the rate of decay is enormous. The culprits are food high in sugar, frequent snacking and insufficient oral hygiene skills. So it is the parents' duty, until the age of 10, to supervise how children brush their teeth: first let the child brush, then check. I know, it really is a tiring business, you feel lazy, there is no time, but remember, only you can form the right hygiene habits for your children. Later they will thank you for it.

There is a myth that milk teeth do not need treating because they will fall out anyway. Nonsense, they absolutely do need treating. And do you know what really is not needed? Frightening children with all sorts of pulling out, angry dentists, drilling and similar horrors. 'If you do not brush your teeth, they will start to hurt and then we will go to the dentist to have them all pulled out' is the biggest nonsense parents can tell their child. And then they wonder why the child is crying before the clinic door has even opened.

It is better to prepare the little one for the visit according to their age. Explain that, if something goes wrong, the dentist only wants to help. Like a firefighter when a house catches fire. And what child is afraid of firefighters?

Children's Dentistry in: frequently asked questions

How much does children's dental treatment cost?
Every little patient is unique, so the treatment plan and price depend on the individual situation. A check-up is 20 €, a milk tooth filling from 50 €, and a fissure sealant 25 €. See the full dental price list.
At what age should children start seeing a dentist?
A child's first dental visit is recommended when the first tooth comes through or when the child turns one. The first visit is a get-to-know-you visit, with no treatment.
How can I prepare my child for the first dental visit?
It helps to talk about the visit positively and to explain that the dentist will help keep the teeth healthy. Avoid words like 'pain', 'pulling out' and 'drilling'. You can play at home: let the child 'brush' a teddy bear's teeth with a toothbrush.
Is children's dental treatment painful?
Procedures are carried out gently, under local anaesthetic, to keep the child comfortable. First the dentist offers to 'send the tooth to sleep' with a special gel, and only then gently administers the anaesthetic.
What should I do if my child is afraid of the dentist?
At Miško Clinic we take time to get to know the child, explain the procedures and build the child's trust in the dentist. If needed, we split the visit into several short stages, never rushing.
How long does a child's dental visit take?
The length depends on the procedure, but we try to keep it as short and efficient as possible. Usually 30 minutes to an hour. If the child does not allow treatment and the visit takes longer, an additional charge applies (15 €).
Can my child choose the colour of the filling?
Yes, for children we offer coloured fillings that help create a positive experience. These are milk tooth fillings that release fluoride and protect the tooth from the inside.
How often should we come for check-ups?
As a child's body grows and changes quickly, we recommend a visit every 6 months. This allows any dental problems to be spotted and solved in good time.
Do you treat children with special needs?
Yes, we are ready to work with all children, taking their individual needs into account. Before the visit, please get in touch via our contact page and tell us about your child's particular needs so we can prepare properly.
Is it really necessary to treat milk teeth if they will fall out anyway?
Yes, it is necessary. A damaged milk tooth causes pain, can infect the permanent tooth growing beneath it, leads the child to chew on one side of the jaw and causes an incorrect bite to form. Treating milk teeth is an investment in the health of the permanent teeth.
Can we come just for a nursery or school certificate?
Yes, a check-up with the issuing of a certificate costs 20 €. It is a good time for the child to get to know the clinic, even if the teeth look healthy.
What should I do if my child chips or knocks out a tooth?
Contact us the same day. If a permanent tooth is knocked out, it should be put back into the socket as soon as possible or kept in milk, and you should arrive within 30 minutes. If it is a milk tooth, simply come in so we can check that the permanent tooth beneath it is not damaged.
