What is professional dental hygiene in?

Professional dental hygiene, often called a scale and polish, is a treatment in which we remove tartar, soft plaque and the pigment left by coffee, tea and tobacco, polish the teeth and, where needed, apply fluoride. It is not a cosmetic extra but the core tool for preventing tooth and gum disease: without regular hygiene, tartar builds up, the gums become inflamed, bad breath appears, and over time periodontitis sets in, which leads to loose teeth.

We work with an ultrasonic scaler, gentle polishing pastes and, where needed, an AirFlow air jet to clean between the teeth. Every visit we set aside time for personalised coaching: we look at how you brush, point out the weak spots, and help you choose the right brush, floss or interdental brush. All prices are set out in the price list.

When is it needed?

  • Routine prevention: every 6 months, to avoid decay, gum inflammation and periodontitis.
  • Bleeding gums: if your gums bleed when you brush, that is a clear sign of inflammation.
  • Tartar on the teeth: visible yellow or brown deposits at the gum line, especially on the inner surfaces.
  • Bad breath: that does not go away after brushing or rinsing.
  • Before whitening or restorations: whitening gel only works on clean enamel, and crowns are only fitted to healthy gums.
  • Wearing braces or clear aligners: more frequent hygiene (every 3 to 4 months) helps avoid decay around the appliance.
  • Pregnancy: hormonal changes raise the risk of gum inflammation, and the second trimester is safe and recommended.

How the procedure works

  1. 1

    Examination

We assess the condition of your gums, the amount of tartar and the health of your fillings, crowns and contact points.

  2. 2

    Ultrasonic scaling

Using gentle vibrations we remove the hard deposits from the teeth and below the gum line, with anaesthetic if needed.

  3. 3

    AirFlow cleaning

A jet of air, water and fine powder lifts coffee, tea and tobacco stains from between the teeth.

  4. 4

    Polishing

We polish the tooth surface with a special paste so plaque is slower to stick to the smooth enamel.

  5. 5

    Fluoride application

Where needed we apply a fluoride varnish, which strengthens the enamel and reduces sensitivity.

  6. 6

    Personalised coaching

We show you how to clean your teeth and help you choose a brush, floss and interdental brush for your exact situation.

  7. 7

    Planning the next visit

We agree when to come back: usually after 6 months, and more often with braces or periodontitis.

Aftercare following a dental hygiene appointment

After hygiene your teeth feel clean and smooth, but for the first day the enamel is slightly more open to pigment, so a few simple rules are worth following:

  • Do not eat or drink anything for half an hour after the procedure, and if fluoride was applied, extend that to an hour.
  • For the first 24 to 48 hours, avoid strongly staining items: coffee, black tea, red wine, red berries, tomato sauce and soy sauce.
  • If your gums were badly inflamed, you may feel some sensitivity to cold or sweet for a few days, which passes on its own.
  • Keep brushing twice a day with a soft brush, and use floss or an interdental brush as we showed you during the visit.

If you notice that your gums are still bleeding after two weeks, please get in touch via our contact page: sometimes deeper cleaning or restorative treatment is needed. Plan your next preventive hygiene for 6 months later, and more often with braces or a history of periodontitis.

Dentist Lauras Smilgevičius on dental hygiene:

"It has long been clear that the most effective, cheapest and most sustainable treatment is prevention. That applies not only to teeth or to a person's whole health, but also to cars, appliances and tomatoes in a greenhouse.

To keep your teeth healthy, care at home really matters. You have probably heard about the two-minute brushing a thousand times, but knowing it is not enough. What matters is how you brush, which tools you use and whether you reach the places where plaque builds up fastest.

Patients sometimes say, 'It is my genes anyway.' Genetics play a part, but daily hygiene, diet, lifestyle, harmful habits, systemic illnesses and existing restorations matter most.

During professional hygiene we do more than remove tartar and plaque. We talk through what is not going well in your routine, show you the right tools, answer your questions and send you home with clear recommendations made for you.

There is no magic pill for gum disease. There is a brush, toothpaste, interdental floss, a hygienist and a dentist. Like in sport: the coach helps, but you have to do most of the work yourself. If you put in the effort, we will certainly help."

Professional Dental Hygiene in: frequently asked questions

How often should I have dental hygiene?
We recommend every 6 months. If your teeth tend to build up deposits quickly or you wear braces, sometimes more often. Dental hygiene is not just about cleanliness, it is prevention.
How much does dental hygiene cost?
Full dental hygiene costs 70 € (including personalised hygiene coaching). Maintenance hygiene costs 30–60 € (with reinforcement of your technique and a check). You can find all prices in the price list.
Is dental hygiene painful?
Most people find the procedure very comfortable. If your gums are sensitive, we can offer anaesthetic; the most important thing is that you feel at ease.
What exactly do you do during dental hygiene?
We remove tartar and plaque, polish the teeth and sometimes apply fluoride. At the end, we give you advice on how best to care for your oral health at home.
I brush my teeth carefully, do I still need professional hygiene?
Yes, definitely. At home you cannot clean everything; some areas stay out of reach even for the best brush. Regular hygiene helps you avoid more serious problems.
Can I eat after dental hygiene?
You can, but we advise waiting about half an hour. If fluoride was used, a little longer, so it has time to do its work.
Does dental hygiene whiten teeth?
Although it is not whitening, teeth often look brighter because we remove plaque and stains. If you would like an even brighter result, we can talk about whitening.
What should I do if my gums bleed?
This often shows that the gums are inflamed. After hygiene the bleeding usually decreases. If it bleeds constantly, please come in and we will help find the cause.
Do children need dental hygiene too?
Yes. Dental hygiene matters from an early age, both for healthy teeth and so the child learns to look after their smile properly. Read more about children's dentistry.
Can dental hygiene be done during pregnancy?
Yes, and it is even recommended. The safest time is the second trimester (weeks 13 to 27). Hormonal changes increase the risk of gum inflammation, so regular hygiene helps avoid so-called pregnancy gingivitis. Always tell us about your pregnancy so we can adapt the procedure.
How long does a full hygiene appointment take?
Allow 60 minutes. If there is a lot of tartar or the gums are badly inflamed, we sometimes split the procedure into two visits to keep it comfortable. Maintenance hygiene takes 30 to 45 minutes.
Can my teeth become more sensitive after hygiene?
For the first 1 to 3 days there may be mild sensitivity to cold or sweet, especially if there was a lot of tartar at the gum line. This passes on its own. If sensitivity lasts longer than a week, call us and we will help with desensitising products.
