What does oral surgery at Miško Clinic involve?

Oral surgery covers procedures that call for surgical expertise: complex extractions, removal of jaw cysts and rebuilding bone before implant treatment. At Miško Clinic these cases are taken on by our consulting surgeon, Dr Donatas Kubilius, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. He handles cases that need surgical help but do not require hospital treatment.

What the surgeon does at our clinic

  • Complex tooth extraction: impacted (unerupted) wisdom teeth, roots that fracture and badly broken-down teeth. For simpler extractions, see our tooth extraction page.
  • Odontogenic cyst removal (cystectomy): removal of cysts in the jawbone.
  • Bone augmentation: when there is not enough bone for an implant, bone augmentation material (Bio-Oss) and collagen membranes are used.
  • Open sinus lift: adding bone in the upper jaw before implant placement. Read more about the sinus lift.
  • The surgical stage of implant treatment: the surgeon places the implant, and the clinic's dentists later fit the crowns and prosthetics. Read more about dental implants.

A 3D CBCT scan is carried out before implant treatment and a sinus lift, and an X-ray or 3D scan is taken before a complex extraction so that the root anatomy and the path of the nerve can be seen.

When is oral surgery needed?

  • An impacted (unerupted) wisdom tooth: it presses on the neighbouring teeth, the gum around it keeps swelling, or an X-ray shows a risk of a cyst.
  • A tooth that is hard to remove: the root is fractured, badly decayed or lies below the gum line.
  • A jaw cyst: an odontogenic cyst seen on an X-ray or 3D scan that needs assessing and, if necessary, removing.
  • Not enough bone for an implant: a 3D CBCT scan shows that bone augmentation or a sinus lift is needed before implant placement.
  • Planned implant treatment: the surgeon places the implant, and the clinic's dentists later complete the crown.
  • An acute abscess: urgent surgical first aid (incision) is described on our urgent dental care page.

How a surgical consultation and procedure work

  1. 1

    Booking

Call us or leave an enquiry on the contact page. The clinic team, together with the surgeon, assesses your situation and offers a consultation time.

  2. 2

    Consultation and imaging

The surgeon examines you and reviews any images you have. Where needed, an X-ray or a 3D CBCT scan is taken to show the roots, the path of the nerve and the bone.

  3. 3

A plan and price in advance

We agree clearly what will be done, what it will cost and what happens afterwards. If your case needs hospital treatment, we discuss this at the consultation.

  4. 4

    The procedure under local anaesthetic

Before the procedure, the area being operated on is numbed with local anaesthetic.

  5. 5

    Written aftercare instructions

After the procedure you receive written aftercare instructions and a contact phone number.

  6. 6

    Follow-up visit

At a follow-up visit, usually after 7 to 10 days, we check the healing and remove stitches if needed.

Who carries out this treatment

Aftercare following oral surgery

After every procedure you will receive written instructions for your particular case. General principles after an extraction or other oral surgery:

  • For the first 24 hours do not rinse your mouth, smoke or drink through a straw, so that the blood clot is not dislodged.
  • In the first few hours, a cold compress held against the outside of the cheek reduces swelling.
  • On the first day eat soft, lukewarm food and do not chew on the operated side.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for at least the first 24 hours. Then increase activity gradually, following your recovery and your dentist’s instructions. Complex extractions and other oral surgery may need a longer break.

After a sinus lift, extra restrictions apply for two weeks: sneeze only with your mouth open, blow your nose very gently, and do not fly or dive. They are all listed on the sinus lift page.

For a detailed description of healing, read our guide on what to do after a tooth extraction. If the pain gets worse rather than better on the second or third day, contact us: it may be a dry socket.

Contact us without delay if bleeding does not stop, if pain and swelling are getting worse and painkillers do not help, or if you have a high temperature or a bad taste in your mouth. If swelling makes it hard to breathe or swallow, call 112.

Why choose Miško Clinic for oral surgery

  • An oral and maxillofacial surgeon: Dr Donatas Kubilius has been licensed since 2013 (MPL-18980), completed his maxillofacial surgery residency at LSMU Kaunas Clinics and worked at Morriston Hospital in Swansea, UK, from 2011 to 2013.
  • Lithuanian and fluent English: Dr Kubilius sees patients in Lithuanian and also speaks fluent English.
  • Teamwork: the surgeon carries out the surgical stage, and the clinic's dentists then complete the crowns and prosthetics, so treatment is planned as one process by one team.
  • Imaging before the procedure: a 3D CBCT scan before implant treatment and a sinus lift, and an X-ray or 3D scan before a complex extraction.
  • Clear prices and written instructions: we agree the price in advance, and after the procedure you receive written aftercare instructions.
  • Saving the tooth comes first: extraction is the last option, not the first.

Oral surgery: frequently asked questions

Is Dr Donatas Kubilius an oral surgeon?
His specialty is oral and maxillofacial surgery: he practises under oral and maxillofacial surgeon medical practice licence no. MPL-18980, issued in 2013. This specialty covers both oral surgery procedures and broader maxillofacial surgery. You can read more about his training and experience on his profile page.
How do I book a consultation with the oral and maxillofacial surgeon?
Call +370 6333 7870 or leave an enquiry on our contact page with a short description of your situation. If you have earlier X-rays or 3D scans, you can email them to info@miskoklinika.lt. The Miško Clinic team, together with Dr Kubilius, will assess your situation and offer a consultation time.
How much does wisdom tooth removal cost?
According to our price list, wisdom tooth extraction costs 100 €, the surgical extraction of a complex or impacted (unerupted) wisdom tooth from 150 €, and a complicated extraction of a tooth or root from 100 €. We confirm the exact price after an examination and X-ray. You can find all prices in the price list.
Do you remove jaw cysts?
Yes. At Miško Clinic, odontogenic cysts are removed (cystectomy) by Dr Donatas Kubilius. This procedure is not listed in the price list, so its cost is discussed individually at the consultation, once the situation has been assessed.
Which cases are treated in hospital rather than at the clinic?
At Miško Clinic, Dr Donatas Kubilius takes on cases that need surgical help but do not require hospital treatment. If the consultation shows that your case needs a hospital, we will discuss this with you. In an emergency, for example if swelling makes it hard to breathe or swallow, swelling is spreading quickly or there has been a serious facial injury, do not wait for a consultation: call 112.
Will I need a 3D scan?
A 3D CBCT scan is carried out before implant treatment and a sinus lift: we do not plan these procedures without one. Before a complex extraction, an X-ray or 3D scan is taken so that we can see the root anatomy and the path of the nerve. The surgeon will tell you which scan you need.
Is the procedure painful?
Before the procedure the area is numbed with local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during it. Once the anaesthetic wears off, there may be swelling and discomfort for a few days. If the pain gets worse rather than better, contact us.
Does the surgeon speak English?
Yes. Dr Donatas Kubilius sees patients in Lithuanian and also speaks fluent English: he worked as a doctor in a UK hospital for two years.
When can an implant be placed after an extraction?
At Miško Clinic we use classic implantology: after an extraction we wait on average 4 months for good-quality bone to form, and only then is the implant placed. We discuss how the tooth will be replaced before the extraction, so that there is one joined-up treatment plan.
