What is dental crowns in?

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that is cemented onto the remaining tooth tissue or onto an implant. It restores the tooth's shape, colour and size and protects a fragile or root-treated tooth from fracturing. A crown lasts 10 to 15 years on average, often longer, if you attend regular professional hygiene visits.

At Miško Clinic we make crowns from four main materials: zirconia (versatile, strong, aesthetic), E.max all-ceramic (the most natural translucency, ideal for front teeth), metal-ceramic (a reliable, budget-friendly classic for back teeth) and porcelain veneers (a thin shell for aesthetic correction). We take impressions with a digital intraoral scanner, so patients are spared plastic trays and the gag reflex. We choose the shade together, using photo documentation and an analysis of the adjacent teeth.

When is it needed?

  • After root canal treatment: the tooth becomes more fragile, and the crown protects it from cracking.
  • A badly broken-down tooth: when a filling is no longer enough to restore the tooth's shape.
  • A large old filling: if a filling takes up a big part of the tooth, a crown reduces the risk of fracture.
  • Aesthetic changes: an irregular shape, colour or gaps that whitening cannot resolve.
  • A crown on an implant: restoring a single tooth on a zirconia-crowned abutment.
  • Part of a bridge: when crowns are used as supports to replace a missing tooth.
  • Worn teeth: height lost to bruxism or erosion is restored with crowns.

How the procedure works

  1. 1

    Consultation and hygiene check

We place a crown only onto a clean, healthy gum. We discuss the material and price.

  2. 2

    Diagnostics and shade selection

X-ray, photo documentation, shade comparison with the neighbouring teeth.

  3. 3

    Preparing the tooth

We minimally reduce the tissue (1 to 2 mm) so the crown fits properly.

  4. 4

    Digital impressions

An intraoral scanner, without plastic trays or the gag reflex.

  5. 5

    Temporary crown

While the final crown is being made in the laboratory, you wear a temporary one to protect the tooth.

  6. 6

    Laboratory work

CAD/CAM milling from zirconia or pressing (E.max), taking 1 to 2 weeks.

  7. 7

    Fitting and final bonding

We check the shape, colour and bite. Once we are both happy with the result, the crown is cemented.

Aftercare following dental crowns

After a crown is cemented, the tooth may be slightly sensitive to hot or cold for a few days: this is normal and passes quickly. If you feel pressure at a certain point or that your bite is not right, get in touch: most likely a minimal adjustment is needed, not major work. It is better to do this within the first week, while the crown is still settling into your bite.

  • For the first 24 hours do not bite very hard or sticky things (nut shells, ice, toffee).
  • Clean the crown like your own teeth: a soft brush, toothpaste and floss every day.
  • Avoid biting your nails, opening bottles or biting thread with your teeth: a common cause of crown fractures.
  • If you know you grind your teeth at night, ask about a protective night guard: it protects both the crown and your other teeth.
  • Attend professional hygiene visits every 6 months: this is a condition for keeping the 2-year guarantee.

Once a year, at a preventive check-up, we inspect the edges of the crown, whether the gum is healthy and whether there are any signs of loosening. A detail spotted early is fixed quickly and cheaply.

Why choose Miško Dental Clinic for dental crowns

  • A digital intraoral scanner: impressions without plastic trays, without the gag reflex, with greater precision.
  • Four material classes: zirconia, E.max, metal-ceramic and veneers, the right solution for each case.
  • CAD/CAM technology: we work with laboratories that mill crowns digitally from a zirconia block.
  • Checked before bonding: you see and touch the finished crown before final cementing; if anything is not right, we adjust it.
  • A 2-year guarantee: we guarantee our work, provided the patient attends regular hygiene visits and preventive check-ups.

Dentist Lauras Smilgevičius on dental crowns:

Patients often tell me: just make it look nice. And that is a great starting point, but before we begin we talk for longer. Why? Because a crown is more than aesthetics: it is a chewing tool that has to last fifteen, twenty years. So the material we choose and the technique we use depend not only on beauty, but also on how much you chew and whether you grind your teeth.

Zirconia is our workhorse: strong, aesthetic, suitable almost everywhere. All-ceramic (E.max) looks superb at the front and is very natural in its translucency. Porcelain veneers are a subtle solution when we want to change the shape or colour of the front teeth with minimal reduction of tooth tissue. Metal-ceramic remains a reliable, budget choice for back teeth or bridges.

We take impressions with a digital scanner, not plastic trays. That means no gag reflex and no unpleasant filling of the mouth. We choose the colour from photo documentation and a light analysis. Before the final bonding you see and touch the result. If anything does not look right, we fix it. Only then do we bond it.

Dental Crowns in: frequently asked questions

Which crown suits me: zirconia, metal-ceramic or a veneer?
It depends on which tooth we are treating, on your bite and on your budget. For back teeth we usually suggest zirconia (strong, aesthetic) or metal-ceramic (cheaper). For front teeth, E.max all-ceramic or zirconia. If we only want to change the aesthetics of a front tooth and the tooth itself is healthy, veneers. We make the final decision together during the consultation.
How many visits are needed to make a crown?
Typically 2 to 3 visits over 2 to 3 weeks. At the first visit, preparing the tooth, taking a scanner impression and placing a temporary crown. At the second visit we fit the finished crown and adjust it if needed. At the third visit, if required, the final bonding is done. The crown takes 1 to 2 weeks to make in the laboratory.
How many years does a crown last and do you give a guarantee?
A well-cared-for zirconia or E.max crown lasts 10 to 15 years on average, often longer. A metal-ceramic crown, similarly. Veneers, 10 years or more, if biting hard objects is avoided. We give a 2-year guarantee on our work, provided the patient attends regular hygiene visits and preventive check-ups.
Does the tooth need to be reduced and how much tissue is lost?
Yes, the tooth tissue is reduced a little when preparing a crown: usually 1 to 2 millimetres around the tooth. Zirconia crowns allow less reduction, and veneers even less (sometimes 0.3 to 0.5 mm). We always aim for minimally invasive preparation: only as much as is necessary for the crown to last.
Does a crown on an implant cost the same as on your own tooth?
Not quite. A crown on an implant at Miško Clinic: a zirconia crown with a standard abutment is from 500 € (Osstem) or 550 € (Straumann). The price includes the abutment that attaches the crown to the implant. All implant solutions are discussed in detail during the consultation.
Can I choose the colour and shape of the crown?
Yes, we choose the colour and shape together. We take photo documentation and select the shade according to the neighbouring teeth or to your wishes (if you are having several crowns at once and want a slightly brighter smile). Before the final bonding you can try the unfixed crown and look in the mirror. If you do not like something, we sort it out.
Can a crown be placed on teeth with filled root canals?
Yes, this is in fact very common. A tooth after root canal treatment becomes more fragile and cracks more easily: a crown wraps around it and protects it from fracturing. For such teeth we usually recommend a zirconia or metal-ceramic crown for strength.
Can I whiten my teeth and have a crown made at the same time?
Yes, but the order matters: first we whiten, then we choose the crown colour. If we make the crown before whitening, the surrounding teeth will lighten afterwards while the crown stays darker: the colour will no longer match. So when planning this work, we always start with whitening.
Will the tooth be sensitive after the crown is placed?
For the first week the tooth may be slightly sensitive to hot or cold, especially if a lot of tissue was reduced beforehand. This is normal and passes. If the sensitivity lasts longer or spontaneous pain appears, get in touch: additional treatment may be needed.
Does an old crown need removing if I am not happy with it?
Yes, an old crown can be cut off (50 €) and replaced with a new one. We often replace old metal-ceramic restorations with zirconia or all-ceramic crowns for better aesthetics.
What should I do if a crown comes loose or falls off?
Get in touch with us as soon as possible. If the crown is intact and the tooth is undamaged, it is usually enough to simply re-cement it properly. Keep the crown and bring it to the visit; do not glue it at home with household adhesive.
Can several crowns be made at the same time?
Yes, this is even recommended if you need several crowns on the front teeth. The colour and shape can then be matched to one another and the result will be more harmonious. We try to arrange all the stages so the patient needs as few visits as possible.
