What to do if you have severe toothache, a swollen cheek or a broken tooth

On weekdays, call us as soon as possible on +370 6333 7870. Tell us what happened, where it hurts and whether there is any swelling. We will assess the situation and offer the nearest available time. When that will be depends on the dentists' schedule, but we try to find a time as soon as we can. In an urgent case it is better to call than to write: it is the quickest way to arrange a visit.

Clinic opening hours: Monday and Tuesday 9:00 to 17:00, Wednesday and Thursday 9:00 to 19:00, Friday 9:00 to 15:00. The clinic is closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

At weekends and on public holidays

According to information published by Jūrininkų poliklinika (in Lithuanian), a duty dentist works at its branch at Taikos pr. 46, Klaipėda, on Saturdays and public holidays from 9:00 to 13:00. This essential dental care is provided to people who have declared their permanent place of residence in Klaipėda city municipality, and you must register in advance by phone on +370 608 87695. Exceptions apply when a public holiday falls on a Friday or a Sunday, or when several public holidays fall in a row, so please check before you go.

When to call 112 straight away

Call 112 or go straight to a hospital emergency department if:

  • swelling makes it hard to breathe, speak or swallow;
  • the area around the eye is swollen, the eye hurts or your vision suddenly gets worse;
  • swelling is spreading quickly, your neck is swollen or it is hard to open your mouth;
  • you have a high temperature (38°C or above), your face is swollen and you feel unwell, and you cannot see a dentist the same day;
  • heavy bleeding does not stop even when you press on it with clean gauze;
  • after a blow to the face or head, the person was knocked out, cannot stay awake, or has problems with vision or hearing.

Do not drive yourself to hospital: ask someone to take you or call 112.

When do you need urgent dental care?

  • Severe or persistent toothache: the pain has lasted more than 2 days, does not go away with painkillers or wakes you at night.
  • A swollen gum or cheek: especially with a bad taste in the mouth, pain when biting or a high temperature. If any of the warning signs above appear, call 112.
  • A broken tooth or a lost filling or crown: put any broken piece of tooth in milk or saliva and bring it to your appointment.
  • A knocked-out permanent tooth: act straight away as described under 'What to do until you see a dentist', and get help urgently.
  • A child's dental injury: a fall or knock has chipped or loosened a tooth. Do not put a baby tooth back in.
  • Pain getting worse after an extraction: if the pain increases rather than eases on the second or third day, it may be a dry socket. Our guide on what to do after a tooth extraction explains the warning signs.
  • Bleeding after an extraction does not stop: if it continues after an hour of firm pressure with clean gauze, call a dentist. For heavy bleeding, faintness or difficulty breathing, call 112 without waiting.

What to do until you see a dentist

These tips can make things easier until your appointment, but they do not replace treatment. If any of the warning signs listed above appear, call 112.

Toothache or a swollen gum

  • You can take over-the-counter painkillers such as ibuprofen or paracetamol. Follow the patient leaflet and do not take more than the recommended dose; if you take other medicines, have a long-term condition or are pregnant, ask a pharmacist first. Do not give aspirin to children under 16.
  • Do not put aspirin tablets on the painful tooth or gum.
  • Eat soft food and chew on the other side. Avoid very hot, very cold and sugary food and drinks.
  • Brush gently with a soft toothbrush. Adults can rinse gently with warm salt water: dissolve half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water, rinse and spit it out. Children should not do this.
  • If a tooth was removed less than 24 hours ago, do not rinse; follow the aftercare advice after tooth extraction instead.
  • Do not smoke: it can make some dental problems worse.

A knocked-out permanent tooth

  • Pick the tooth up by the crown (the white part) and do not touch the root.
  • If it is dirty, rinse it briefly in milk, saline or saliva and try to put it gently back into its socket. Once it is back in place, bite gently on a clean handkerchief or gauze.
  • If you cannot put it back, keep the tooth in milk or saliva (for example, spit into a cup). Do not let it dry out: water is a poorer choice, but it is still better than keeping the tooth dry.
  • See a dentist straight away and take the tooth with you.
  • Do not put a baby tooth back in, as this could damage the permanent tooth growing underneath. Still bring your child to a dentist.

A broken tooth or a lost filling

  • Put any broken piece of tooth in milk or saliva and bring it to your appointment.
  • Rinse your mouth gently with warm water. If your lip or cheek is swelling, hold a cold compress against the outside of your face.
  • Until your visit, avoid chewing on the side with the broken tooth.
